AFGE Local 1133 Files Union Level Grievance for Arbitrary AWOL Designations During Adverse Weather Event

We want to inform all affected employees that the Union has officially submitted a Union Level Grievance concerning the AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave) designations issued during the recent adverse weather emergency that occurred around January 6th - January 10th, 2025.

The grievance, filed on January 27th, 2025, has been formally presented to the Medical Center Director, addressing the arbitrary and capricious denial of leave and the punitive use of AWOL during hazardous weather conditions. This grievance was submitted on behalf of all Bargaining Unit Employees who were impacted.

Key Points from the Grievance:

  • The grievance highlights that AWOL was used as a disciplinary tool despite the adverse weather making it unsafe for many to report to work.

  • It points out inconsistencies in how leave requests were handled, with some employees being granted leave while others received AWOL without clear justification.

  • The grievance also outlines the Agency's failure to develop and implement an effective contingency plan to ensure employee safety during the weather emergency.

Current Status:

  • The grievance has been officially submitted and presented by Steward Danny Rivera Jr. and Union President John Hetzel.

  • We are currently awaiting a formal response from the Agency.

What You Should Do If You’re Affected:

  • If you still have AWOL on your file as a result of this incident, please send us a message through the chat feature and let us know.

  • Provide any relevant documentation you may have regarding your leave request and the circumstances around the AWOL designation.

Next Steps:

  • The Union will continue to monitor the situation closely.

  • We will provide updates as soon as we receive any new information or decisions regarding the grievance.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Together, we will ensure that your rights are protected and that fair practices are upheld.
